Mining techniques have dramatically transformed over many years, with technological advances improving efficiency and safety. In the discovery stage of mineral exploration, mining engineers work closely with geologists to identify minerals and assess reserve quantities. Mineral engineers may then drill core samples and conduct surface surveys, searching for specific compounds and ores. Unless mineral engineering is done on public lands, the property owners may play a significant role in mining exploration.

Generally, mining is either done from the surface or underground. Surface mining requires the stripping of surface vegetation, dirt, and if necessary, layers of bedrock in order to reach buried ore deposits. Additionally, explosives may be called for in order to facilitate breakage. Hard minerals such as limestone, sand, gravel, and slate are generally quarried into a series of benches. Strip mining, on the other hand, is more appropriate for softer minerals such as clays and phosphate. In-situ mining can be done from the surface using dissolving agents, retrieving the ore via pumps. Finally, hydraulic jets may be utilized to wash away the overburden or to clear out the ore itself.

Wind Power Engineering

The US Department of Energy's Wind Program works with industry partners to increase the performance and reliability of next-generation wind technologies, while lowering the cost of wind energy. Research efforts have helped to increase the average capacity factor (a measure of wind power plant productivity) from 20% for wind turbines installed before the year 1999 to an average of almost 35% today. At the same time, wind energy costs have been reduced from over 55 cents (in current US dollars) per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in 1985, down to an average of 2.4 cents in the US today.

To ensure future industry growth, the wind power must continue to evolve, building on earlier turbine technology successes to further improve reliability, increase capacity factors, and reduce costs. The newest inventions coming out of the DOE Wind Program can also be found on the Energy Innovation Portal, from the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. Further, improved turbine performance has led to a more robust domestic wind industry.
